So to continue with my “everything Google” campaign I’d like to share with you my thoughts on the Nexus One. Of course you’ve read everywhere else, including here, the specs on the phone. But have you heard anything on using it on a regular basis?

Well let me tell you this… it’s AWESOME! Fast, stylish, slim, and I think it’s way better than my old iPhone! Let me begin to tell you WHY;

1)   The speed! Not only is it great to be on 3G with TMobile, but the Snapdragon processor is amazing. I fly through the UI and there’s no lag on movies or games, and moving between apps is speedy too.

2)   It has a way better camera WITH flash and has zoom! You can edit images via a Photoshop.com app on the market (free) and upload pics to the web.

3)   If you use Google for your contacts, email, calendar or Google voice than this is fantastic. They all sync perfectly, but iTunes beat the Nexus with the content handling.

4)   The widgets on the 5 home screens are way better than just icons to apps like the iPhone. I can read news headlines, Facebook & Twitter updates, toggle 3G wifi Bluetooth etc. without going through the Settings.

5)   Having removable storage is great! You can up your storage at any time up to 32G. With that you can add music, movies, pictures etc from other computers… not just the original computer like iTunes forces.

But of course there’s downfall to the great Nexus, but it’s still new. I mean come on, it took how long to get PICTURE MESSAGING to the iPhone??

1)   Like I said the iPhone beats N1 in content management, ie music, podcasts, video and pictures. iTunes makes it easy to sync everything all in one place unlike mounting the SD card to add everything.

2)   Accessories, charging and batteries… N1 has removable battery and larger than iPhone BUT everyone has an iPhone/iPod so you can bum their charger. But that may change soon.

3)   The speaker is great, well loud at least. But it faces the rear of the phone, so hearing it ring in your pocket depends on the direction of the speaker. Also watching movies or playing games the people in front of you (on the bus, plane or train) will hear it better than you.

Other than that I’m very happy with my Google Nexus One! I can’t wait to see the accessories, apps, and everything else Google has in stored for this great phone! Please leave your comments on your N1/iPhone or any questions I can answer.

So what is Metadata? Well, aside from allowing all of us to to partake in The Glory of Cat Schwartz, Metadata is data “outside” of normal data. Allow me to provide a familiar example, the digital photograph. When a digital camera is used to snap a priceless childhood moment (or a wholesome family adventure at Mardi Gras) more then just the image itself is captured. Along with the DATA that we humans consume as a picture, METADATA regarding the brand of camera used, the shutter speed, the aperature rating and the time and date are all recorded as well. Useful stuff!

Now, when it comes to Salesforce, underneath all the fancy workflows, reports, layouts, and user roles what we really have is a Relational Database. The Data within this database are the raw records: the first names, last names, phone numbers, favorite colors, stance on antidisestablishmentarianism, and their opinon on who the best Star Trek captain to “Boldy Go Where No Man Has Gone Before” (Picard) was you know all the things it’s important to know about your customers. The Metadata describes the format of this data, which fields are text fields (and how many characters these fields can hold), which are phone numbers, email addresses and how many of each field each Object has. In a sense you can think of an Object in Salesforce as a Table in any other RDMS (MySQL, PostgreSQL, or Oracle. But not MsSQL because let’s face it, who actually pays $10,000 a month for something that an open source solution does for free?). Okay, enough backstory, I hope you all now understand what is meant by Metadata. Let’s get to the code!

First things first, we need to include the relevant parts of the PHP Toolkit into our source code.

define("SOAP_CLIENT_BASEDIR", "../phptoolkit/phptoolkit-13_1/soapclient");
require_once (SOAP_CLIENT_BASEDIR.'/SforcePartnerClient.php');
require_once (SOAP_CLIENT_BASEDIR.'/SforceMetadataClient.php');
require_once ('../phptoolkit/phptoolkit-13_1/userAuth.php');

Let’s look at this line by line. The first one basically says where the Soap Client directory is, it’s found within the toolkit you download from salesforce. The second and third lines refer to which aspects of the toolkit we’ll be using. In this case we’re using the partner client (as opposed to the highly typed enterprise client) and we’ll be making use of the Metadata functionality. The fourth line is the path to our userAuth.php (remember putting your username, password, and security key in it last time just like I told you? If not Go back!) which contains all of the login credentials. Great! Now we’re ready to actually make a connection.

$mySforceConnection = new SforcePartnerClient();
$mySoapClient = $mySforceConnection->createConnection(SOAP_CLIENT_BASEDIR. '/partner.wsdl.xml');
$loginResult = $mySforceConnection->login($USERNAME, $PASSWORD);

$myMetadataConnection = new SforceMetadataClient(SOAP_CLIENT_BASEDIR.'/metadata.wsdl.xml', $loginResult, $mySforceConnection);

Okay, you really want to be doing all of this inside of a try/catch block but I’m going to take out the error checking for now just for the sake of readability. The first step is to create an instance of the Partner Client object (Remember, as opposed to the enterprise client). Once we have an instance of the object it’s time to create the connection, in this case being sure to pass the correct wsdl to the call to createConnection. WSDL!?! What the heck is that!?! I hear you cry. Well, the short answer is don’t worry about it, Voodoo program it up. The long answer I leave to a future discussion of WSDL 1.1, 2.0, SOAP (not that kind that every good nerd wishes their partners in crime would actually USE at Defcon, Simple Object Access Protocol). It’s enough to say right now that the whole point of using the PHP toolkit is to abstract out those details. Now these wsdl files are generated by salesforce. Log in, click setup (at the top) then click develop, API (from the left hand nav bar). The rest is pretty self explanatory. I hope you’ll forgive my sine at going off on that tangent, but let’s continue.

The next step is to connect to the “normal” web services portion of salesforce. This is done by calling login and hoping for the best! Once we have this connection to normal web services we must shift over to the metadata client (I know, it’s a lot of work, but at least you can just copy and paste this code). I’ll spare you the details, but let’s just say you have to take your web services session over to metadata. This is done by creating an instance of the SforceMetadataClient passing the path to metadata.wsdl as one of the arguments.

Now, if you’ve managed to get connected allow me to be the first to offer you a heartfelt “Look we’re connected! Huzzah’s are in order!!!” You have proved your ability to triumph over the cookies of the dark side and I’m glad you made it!

Well, I think that’ll wrap things up for this installment, but next time we’ll look at how to create a custom object, and how to poll to see just when that custom object actually get’s created! I look forward to seeing you all in Salesforce’s PHP Toolkit -The Metadata API Part II!

We can go ahead and get down to the facts what we know;

Nexus One probably is probably the long awaited “Google Phone” seeing that Google trademarked the name. And we know that Google did not manufacture the phone themselves, they had their #1 HTC do that.

As far as hardware it has a Snapdragon processor and an OLED touchscreen! Bluetooth 2.1, WiFi 802.11g/n, FM receiver, 5MP auto-focus camera with LED flash, dual mic’s (one for noise canceling), GPS, compass and expandable memory.

We know it’s running Android 2.1 aka Flan and by the videos posted we can see an animated background image, Google Goggles and Google Navigation. What we also see is a grid icon that shows a preview of the different pages.

rendered NexusOne

rendered Nexus One

Now to what we DON’T know… or what I think actually;

Unlocked, not sure but seems like a great idea; learn from AT&T/Apple’s mistake. Rather than locking the Nexus One to ONLY T-Mobile and causing theft of phones and hacking to unlock the software, sell it unlocked! And since Google doesn’t have a physical store (yet), sell it online, ship it unlocked internationally and bring in the money from unsubsidized sales.

VoIP… nothing mentioned as of now but we know that Google recently attained Gizmo5 which is a voice over IP company similar to Skype. We all know of Google Voice which is its own VoIP and includes cheap international calls, call screening, call block, enhanced voicemail with transcripts, and call recording.

Price! No one knows but if it’s true the price through a T-Mobile contract will be around $199, comparable to the iPhone 3Gs. We don’t know unsubsidized prices but I’m sure it’ll be just as close to iPhone’s $599 pricetag… and people WILL buy it!

T-Mobile partner? Probably seeing that the Nexus One has T-Mobile’s 3G band, T-Mobile apparently will pay Google for new customers that sign up due to Nexus One, and they’ve (T-Mobile) implemented the Android Market billing directly to customer’s monthly bill.

Lastly it is rumored to be announced or release as soon as January 5th. But now there’s a rumor the 1st due to Google’s countdown clock; speculation to me. BUT, Google is holding their I/O in January, which would be a great time to release the Nexus One to developers, no?

If I’ve left anything out, please feel free to fill me in and leave a comment. But I personally cannot keep up with all the details coming out!

iGoogle
So it all started back when I wanted to create another email address due to all the spam in my Yahoo mail account. I found GMail courtesy of Google of course and although it was in “Beta” testing I signed up and instantly fell in love! Eventually my friends signed up as well making us one close-knit family until Google Chat came about! OH BOY!… they added VIDEO chat next!

Then talks about Google making an operating system for phones came about along with a video; I laughed. Then BoOm, PoW, WacK, SPLaT like the old Batman movies… Android! Look at it grow too. Now I have the HTC Hero with Google’s Android platform and the market. While in the market I see Google Voice? What’s that?

I don’t know but I want it, and I got it! AWESOME… now I’m filled with joy to the new and awesome features Google Voice brings to my browser and phone! Voicemail transcripts, free txts, caller announcement and screening, and a BLOCK FEATURE! I love it. What more is there you ask… Google Chrome comes out, and now for my Mac OSX!

I’m running Chrome and it’s great, so far. Still new and doesn’t have all the plugin and features I’m used to with Firefox, but I’m sure it will… it’s Google! One petpeeve is the non-page up/down feature using 3 fingers in and up or down motion. Also, why aren’t there GMail and Voice notifications integrated? Or even Wave… Maybe because Wave just came out and it’s limited. But I HAD to have it anyways!

Done! Got one of those now… but I don’t know what it does really. I guess it’s because I only have one other friend that has it, I haven’t played much with it. I look forward to more of Google’s attempts to take over the world, one person’s life at a time.

Recently I’ve been doing a lot of work with Salesforce, trying to fill in the gaps and bend it to serve my purposes.  Being a programmer at heart I delighted when I saw that there was not one but TWO API’s for me to use (albeit for entirely different purposes), but I was extraordinarily disappointed with the lack of support, documentation, and sample code available.  To wit, I’m going to be providing you readers with a step by step introduction to creating Custom Objects with Custom Fields using the PHP Toolkit Version 13.1.  In this five part series we’ll explore:

  • Introduction (What’s you’re reading now)
  • The Metadata API
    • Connecting
    • Making Requests
    • Checking the Status of a Request
  • PHPToolkit Bug Fixes
    • Shame on your salesforce for providing a broken API!  Never fear readers, I’ll show you exactly what you need to change and why
  • Creating Custom Objects using the PHPToolkit
    • Complete with Sample Code!
  • Creating Custom Fields
    • Multiple fields, not just a single field as demonstrated via the sample provided by Salesforce
    • Complete with Sample Code!

Before we get started, this introduction will make sure you are ready to actually work with the API.  Everyone should visit developerforce and sign up for a free developer’s account to Salesforce. Kudos to salesforce for providing free full featured developers accounts, limited only by the total number of records and the total number of users.

Once you’ve signed up, go ahead and download the PHP Toolkit Version 13.1 and drop it into a directory. Edit the userAuth.php file to include login credentials for the salesforce user you’ll be using to interact with the API (Perfect names include ‘Bender’, ‘Johnny5′, ‘HAL’, ) and you’re ready for Part 2: Salesforce’s PHP Toolkit -The Metadata API!

So I may be a bit late on this one but who can blame me. Windows 7 just rolled out not too long ago, who could expect there to be talk, rumors, screenshots, etc on Windows 8?! Sure not me. Well apparently there’s a website based on Windows 8 here, http://windows8news.com/ From what I’ve read the release date will be around the same time as 7, October 22 2012.

I’ve also read that it will be a MAJOR/FULL update like XP and Vista, not an upgrade such as Windows 7. So I can only assume that the price point will be high, and upgrade will be higher and a clean install will be mandatory. But of course we can expect this from Microsoft; the upgrade from Vista to 7 required a clean install too.

Lastly, for now, they’ve come to agreement to stop with their silly naming system. ME, XP, Vista are not the fashion anymore and have moved to a numerical system (obviously) starting with 7, 8, I’d assume 9 and so on. SO ORIGINAL.

I just can’t wait to see what Microsoft brings to the table with the next few builds. (Loving the touch computers!)

For those of you who have and iPhone, only the (approximately) 10% of you are vulnerable. That 10% is the amount of Jailbroken phones, and if you don’t know what that means or if it’s you then it’s NOT. Quickly, Jailbroken phones break Apple (and AT&T’s) stronghold on installing unapproved apps on your iPhone and customizing your icons and background among MANY other things.

The first attack on [Jailbroken] iPhone users was by and Australian programmer back around the 8th of November who created a worm to change your background lockscreen. He originally demanded money from his victims to fix the hack and protect them from later attacks but later revoked his request and explained he merely wanted to “warn” the masses. No information was taken and nothing was done to the infected iPhones except the background change.

But now there’s another attack, malicious indeed, on iPhone users in the Netherlands. This worm redirects the users to a clone [ING Direct] internet banking site where users type in the Username and Passwords. No word on the full extent or outcome of the worm but it is obviously out for financial reasons. ING Banking is in a hurry to warn all of its customers of this worm and protect the uninfected.

In a long-going battle regarding Jailbreaking iPhones, Apple now has more backing to it’s arguments that nothing good comes from Jailbreaking.

All the hype and info streaming in from all over! Haven’t heard of the Internet Giant’s OS system until today, but WOW. Looks like a great concept; pure Cloud Computing!! No worries of install CDs, quicker start-up times, constant internet connection and data stored online and not locally!

Some may not know about Cloud Computing but it’s pretty simple “even a caveman can do it.” Most people do it already for that matter! Ever save a picture to your Flickr, MySpace, Facebook, etc.? Well then you’ve used the power of the cloud! That image is not only on your computer, but also stored and accessed through those pages! I’ll post a link/video to better explain it, but you get the main idea.

Anyways, Google is taking over! They’re already bumping heads in the mobile OS category with their Android devices but now targeting Apple’s Mac OSX and Microsoft’s Windows… next step CAR INDUSTRY!  (look out Ford)

So Windows 7 has been out for a while now and reviews are setting in. I personally have a bias and LOVE Apple, plus I haven’t had the chance to use Windows 7 yet. I have however used Vista and I’m not a fan. Below are 2 links referring to Wired.com listing 7 reasons to avoid Windows 7 and 7 reason to switch… confusing to me, they’re both by written by the SAME person! I would rather have you, my reader’s input on what you think; Pro’s and Con’s of Windows 7, your thoughts, pains or praises… ready, set, go!
